Virtual Storage After All These Years

(RA)

Stream: Woodcote
Time: 11:00 - 11:45

Presentation

You might think virtual storage is a blast from the past - but it's every bit as relevant today. All systems have it - and you can't buy more. So you'd better manage it carefully. But what is virtual storage? It's a key mechanism for optimising the use of physical memory - and so is central to system performance. Virtual storage has evolved considerably over the decades - an evolution which has been essential to growth. This is true not just of z/OS but also middleware such as Db2. Join Alice and Martin as they: * Introduce virtual storage and its constituent parts. * Describe how it continuously evolved over the decades while preserving the fundamentals. * Show how you can manage it with sophisticated instrumentation and along the way they'll share a few examples of when things don't go quite to plan.
