OpenTelemetry on the Mainframe: Zero-Code Instrumentation, Semantic Conventions, and the Collector

(NC)

Stream: Copse
Time: 14:15 - 15:00

Presentation

2026 represents a pivotal moment for OpenTelemetry as it achieved official CNCF graduation. OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation is nearing a 1.0 release, and the Mainframe SIG is advancing initial z/OS semantic conventions while evaluating Collector deployment models for z/OS. This session explores what these developments mean for mainframe practitioners. Attendees will learn how Kubernetes-proven zero-code instrumentation applies to mainframe environments, how federated semantic conventions can represent hardware, virtualization, subsystems, and transactions, and what architectural considerations matter when bringing the OpenTelemetry Collector onto z/OS. The session closes with practical guidance for applying these key OpenTelemetry trends to daily mainframe observability practices.
