Maintaining and evolving a large open source ecosystem requires significant engineering effort, from porting new software and reviewing code changes to analyzing static analysis findings and contributing fixes upstream. As the zopen ecosystem continues to grow, AI is becoming an important engineering accelerator, helping developers automate repetitive tasks, improve code quality, and focus on solving higher-value problems. This session explores how AI-assisted workflows are being integrated across the zopen development lifecycle to streamline open source enablement on z/OS. We will demonstrate how AI is being used to assist with automated porting, static analysis and CodeQL issue triage, AI-assisted code reviews, and intelligent guidance for upstream contributions. Beyond today's capabilities, the session will present a vision for an intelligent closed-loop engineering workflow where AI continuously learns from build results, code reviews, community discussions, and upstream feedback to improve future recommendations and automate routine development tasks. We will also discuss how MCP servers and AI agents can orchestrate these workflows while keeping developers in control of engineering decisions. Attendees will gain practical insights into applying AI to improve developer productivity, reduce maintenance overhead, accelerate open source adoption on z/OS, and build more scalable and sustainable engineering workflows for enterprise open source ecosystems.

I work on open source projects around software tooling platforms. My current project is Zowe, which is part of the Linux Foundation and Open Mainframe Project where I am part of the leadership committee and an ambassador. Prior to Zowe I worked on Eclipse tooling and before that Java 2 Standard Edition. I enjoy astronomy, running, biking, piano, and in my spare time helping bring open source tooling to the mainframe computing platform for a new generation of Z heads.
