Learning about mainframes is difficult when access to real systems is limited and each part is taught separately. GIBSON is a free, portable educational environment covering traditional mainframe technologies, including TSO, CICS, Db2, z/VM and z/TPF, alongside coding, system administration, security, threat intelligence, offensive testing and digital forensics. It also includes a working bank, dashboards, guided labs, documentation and deliberately vulnerable systems. During the session, I will show how learners can follow an activity from beginning to end. They can run code, interact with banking applications, examine data and services, test for weaknesses, investigate the evidence and apply defensive controls. Examples will come from the coding, penetration-testing, threat intelligence and forensic labs, showing how the same environment can be viewed by a developer, administrator, attacker, defender or investigator. Attendees will learn how the wider mainframe environment fits together and how attacks and defensive actions can be followed across connected systems. GIBSON can support university teaching, workshops, self-study, security training and capture-the-flag exercises. It is free for educational use, requires no production mainframe access and runs on almost anything from a raspberry PI or old laptop to a server.
