As enterprises standardize on OpenTelemetry for observability across cloud-native and distributed platforms, mainframe must be part of the same visibility story. This session explores how OpenTelemetry fits into the broader observability strategy for organizations running mission-critical Db2 workloads on the mainframe. The presentation begins with a detailed overview of OpenTelemetry fundamentals, including metrics, traces, logs, context propagation, semantic conventions, collectors, and exporters. The session connects these concepts to familiar Db2 and z/OS metrics such as IFCIDs, SMF records, Db2 accounting data, and transaction performance. The session then introduces the Mainframe OpenTelemetry Special Interest Group (SIG), focusing on its work and its objectives. Next, we will review IBM's OpenTelemetry-related enhancements and direction for Db2 and z/OS, highlighting how Db2 telemetry can be integrated into enterprise observability pipelines. Finally, the session will explore how ISV vendors are leveraging OpenTelemetry to complement existing Db2 monitoring solutions, enable cross-platform performance analysis, and correlate Db2 activity with upstream and downstream application components, without replacing proven mainframe monitoring practices.
