Modernizing mainframe applications requires more than translating COBOL into another language. In this session, we’ll demonstrate an open-source AI agent framework that helps analyze legacy applications, reverse engineer business logic, map dependencies, and accelerate modernization to Java or .NET. You’ll see live demonstrations of AI-assisted workflows using GitHub Models, Azure OpenAI, MCP, Neo4j, and static analysis, along with practical lessons learned from enterprise modernization projects. Attendees will leave with reusable architectural patterns and ideas for applying AI to large-scale mainframe modernization.

Global black belt software architect Senior Solution Engineer GBB | Modernise | Microsoft Gustav Kaleta is a Senior Solution Engineer in Microsoft’s Migrate & Modernize Global Black Belt organisation, based in Denmark. With an M.Sc. in Software Engineering from Napier University of Edinburgh, he helps enterprise customers modernise legacy platforms and design cloud-native architectures on Microsoft Azure. Gustav been a speaker at through out his 17 years at Microsoft and he works closely with customers on proofs of concept, technical architecture, building MVP PoC products in early research, drive workshops, enable field-driven product feedback and helping bridge customer requirements with engineering priorities. Gustav contributes to Microsoft enablement, customer strategy, and modernisation guidance across complex transformation programmes. He is recognised for combining deep hands-on engineering expertise with clear communication, practical delivery focus, and the ability to guide organisations through cloud and application modernisation journeys.
Julia is a Software Global Black Belt at Microsoft, helping large-scale organizations accelerate dev workflows through pragmatic, end-to-end platform engineering. With a background as a Software Engineer, Dev Lead, and Cloud Solution Architect, she speaks fluent developer and management—and knows how to bridge the gap without losing either side in translation. She’s a big-picture thinker who also loves to understand the details. Web and frontend will always have a place in her ❤️. Outside work, Julia is a gamer, a proud fahrradmaus, and a former quarterback for a women’s American football team (yes, really).
