DSNDB01, DSNDB04, DSNDB06 Explained for Beginners When people first see names like DSNDB01, DSNDB04, and DSNDB06 in Db2 for z/OS, they often assume they are just random system codes. In reality, they are three very important “system databases” that Db2 needs in order to work properly every day. This session will explain these three databases in a very simple way, without assuming any prior Db2 knowledge. Instead of starting with complex definitions, we will use easy comparisons: • DSNDB01 is like the brain of Db2. It helps Db2 keep track of important internal information it needs to run. • DSNDB06 is like a library catalog. It stores information about everything in Db2—tables, columns, and relationships—so Db2 knows what exists and where to find it. • DSNDB04 is like the house and storage space Db2 uses behind the scenes to organize internal working information. This session will also explain what people mean when they say “Db2 Catalog” and “Db2 Directory,” and how these fit into the three databases above. Many beginners mix these up, so we will clearly separate what each one does using simple everyday examples instead of technical language. The session will also touch on how these databases are used in real life when Db2 runs queries or manages data, explained in a step-by-step way that avoids deep technical detail but shows what is happening behind the scenes. By the end of the session, the attendants will be able to: • Recognize DSNDB01, DSNDB04, and DSNDB06 without confusion • Understand what the Catalog and Directory actually mean • Explain their purpose in simple, everyday language • Build an easy mental picture of how Db2 is organized This session is designed for complete beginners, new mainframe users, or anyone who has always been told “these are system databases” but never really understood what that means.
