DBA 2.0 - Making Change the DBA's Advantage

(NA)

Stream: Nürburgring

Presentation

The DBA's role has evolved — and AI is now asking the question out loud: what exactly is the DBA for? This session traces DBA 1.0 to DBA 2.0. Why the DBA became the bottleneck: the parallel pipeline problem, where one application change spawns three manually-coordinated delivery tracks. What replaces it: database as code, DDL in source control beside application code, SQL standards enforced as automated CI gates rather than human review, tested backout as a pipeline requirement, and the DBA defining the rules the pipeline enforces. Then AI, honestly — what is in production today versus vendor projection. You will leave able to: diagnose your own bottleneck; choose between state-based and migration-based database-as-code; identify your first automation candidate; turn site standards into enforced code; and judge your organisation's real AI readiness.

  • I’ve spent my career helping people build and run the systems their businesses depend on, whether that’s tuning Db2, modernising IBM Z workloads, or mentoring engineers who want to grow. I’m recognised as a 5× IBM Champion and OMP Ambassador, but what motivates me most is making complex technology easier to understand and simpler to work with. I love sharing what I’ve learned through speaking, writing, and community work so others can develop their craft and feel proud of the systems they create.
