Beyond Monitoring: Observability and OpenTelemetry for Modern Mainframes Traditional mainframe monitoring relies on predefined metrics, thresholds and alerts to keep systems available. But as complexity grows and hybrid architectures and faster release cycles become the norm, that approach falls short because teams need to understand why issues occur, not just when they occur. As enterprise observability initiatives expand, mainframe teams are increasingly asked to connect z/OS data into the platforms and workflows used by broader IT, SRE and application teams. In this session, we'll explore how observability and OpenTelemetry move mainframe operations beyond static, threshold-based monitoring by providing the context, correlation, and end-to-end understanding that modern operations require, while supporting an incremental adoption journey. You'll learn how traces, metrics, and logs improve root-cause analysis across mainframe and distributed systems and how OpenTelemetry reduces blind spots by making mainframe data available to enterprise platforms you may already use, such as Splunk, Grafana, Dynatrace, Elastic and Datadog. We'll also look at how AI can sharpen mainframe anomaly detection and accelerate root-cause analysis. You'll leave with practical takeaways for adopting observability and OpenTelemetry incrementally, improving visibility and resolution times while preserving the stability and resilience expected from mainframe environments.
